Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan
Unit: School Violence Date: November 1, 2000 By: Aaron Hamann
Anticipatory Set:
I will read an article from last Wednesdays Iowa State Daily about a recent incident of school violence in Arizona. I will then tie this in to the fact that school violence does happen and is something that we as future teachers will have to deal with.
Objective(s):
The learner will:
-Participate in a round table that will generate a list of acts of school violence
-Learn ways to prevent and deal with school violence
-Demonstrate understanding of the structure of the Safe Schools Pyramid
-Discuss what they personally want to learn more about and why
Cooperative Learning Strategy: Round Table & Three Step Interview
Positive Interdependence: Each group member will be required to explain one of the levels of the pyramid and also, everyone will depend on each other to produce our initial list of violent acts.
Individual Accountability: Each student is required to "teach" the rest about one prevention level of the pyramid and they will also be required to give at least one violent act on our initial list.
Face to Face Interaction: During the Three Step Interview, the group members will pair off to learn about each other and learn about what the other person wants to learn more about.
Social Skill: Each student will learn how to ask and answer interview questions and everyone will use public speaking skills to present their ideas.
Processing: During each persons mini-presentation, I will be checking to see if their explanation shows understanding of what they have read. If it has not, I will interject to assist them and give them some clarity
Input:
ISU Daily article
Discussion/Round Table about acts of school violence
Prevention of School Violence Handout/Safe Schools Pyramid
Current statistics related to school violence
Group members thoughts on what they want to know more about
Checking for Understanding:
(Blooms Taxonomy is a guide)
Evaluation: Give suggestions as to what an act of school violence is.
Comprehension: Explain to the group what your pyramid level is all about.
Analysis: What do all of these methods of preventing/dealing with school violence lead you to think? Who are the different levels of the pyramid geared to?
Synthesis: What do you as a future teacher want to learn more about? Why do you want to learn more about this and what do you think you might find?
Closure:
Here I will give them recent statistics on school violence and reiterate to them how prevention and student centered programs will help them deal with school violence. I will also encourage them to learn about their districts policy when they get a job.
